Young People’s Caribbean Carnival
On 13th July we took part in the Young People’s Caribbean Carnival. In the weeks before the carnival everyone who took part put in lots of time and effort making costumes and preparing for the big day. On the day of the carnival we were blessed with a warm sunny day after all the recent rain, and everyone met behind the Town Hall where the carnival would start. The jungle costumes were laid out and waiting, so everyone got dressed in their Tumble in the Jungle costumes either as a lion, a monkey or giraffe, practised some carnival moves and we were ready to go.

The procession left from the town hall at 1.30pm and the sun was still shining. We got off to a great start, accompanied by Cheeky Monkey and Leo the Lion who proved very popular. We danced up Forest Road, turned up Wood Street (where Leo and Cheeky Monkey had to leave us and go home because they were getting very hot!) and then up Vallentin Road and Church Hill towards Walthamstow Central.

The procession ended in Walthamstow Town Square where everyone had crowded to look at all the different groups and costumes in the carnival. We were tired after all the cheering and dancing so we were glad to finally arrive and have a drink! Then everyone gathered round and eagerly waited for the results to be announced. First the schools were announced and then the group categories. The 3rd place in the groups category went to another group, so we started to bite our nails…but we were so surprised when they announced that we had won 2nd prize! Everyone ran up onto the stage to collect our trophies and wave to the crowd. All the hard work of making the costumes for weeks and weeks along with our energetic procession, dance moves and chants had paid off!

Now we have the trophies back at The Soul Project and we will soon be displaying them so everyone can admire them and be proud of being part of The Soul Project! Thanks to everyone who took part, we all had a really great time. Roll on next year’s carnival!

Fellowship Art Project
The Fellowship Art Project is organised by the Borough of Waltham Forest and runs through many schools and community groups in the area. Every group/school that takes part makes 1 piece or collection of art based on a theme which is displayed in Lloyds Park Theatre throughout July. This year the theme of the project was “inspired by nature from other countries”. Our sculpture consists of a big tree which is surrounded by clear plastic spheres containing animals which children have made, representing raindrops in the rainforest. A disco ball in the centre makes it all light up magically like the rainforest.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who took part, and we welcome you all to visit Lloyds Park Theatre to see our wonderful sculpture along with all the art from other schools and groups!
Opening times: 10th to 27th July 2008, 12-7pm on Thursdays and Fridays, 2-7pm on Saturday and Sunday

Company News

On the 4th August 2006 The Soul Project successfully converted from being a limited company to being a Community Interest Company CIC.

A CIC is a new type of company, designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good. CICs were set up, with all the flexibility and certainty of a company’s form, but with some special features to ensure they are working for the benefit of the community.
